JKMuir’s Marco Burgio is part of our construction inspection team and is currently overseeing the construction of the Metropolitan District Commission’s South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel, a four mile long, 200 feet below ground tunnel which will provide temporary wastewater storage. Marco describes some of his experiences and lessons:

1. How did you get started in the construction industry?

Marco: After working in construction in previous years, I was motivated to acquire a degree that provided me an opportunity to continue to work in this field but on the construction observation side.

2. What’s the best part of your work and being a part of the construction industry?

Marco: The fact that I can be out more in the field than inside the office, giving me valuable experience on how projects come together from start to finish.

3. What’s the biggest challenge you have faced in your work?

Marco: While all construction projects can have unforeseen conditions, working underground has its own set of unique challenges due to 24/7 operations and varying bedrock conditions.

4. What is the most important lesson(s) that you have learned in the field?

Marco: Regulations are implemented for a reason and should be upheld to achieve completion of the job in a timely and safe manner.

5. What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in this industry?

Marco:  It is important for you to assess whether being in the field or working inside the office is a stronger preference.  Having experience with both working in the field and working inside the office can provide a lot of insight! It is also critical to develop skills for resolving conflicts and effectively communicating project status and requirements, as well as issues to the owner, engineer and contractor.
